Queen began recording their first album in 1971, but no one was initially willing to release it. The album was not released until July 13, 1973. My American friends, Christina and Marcel, were living in London at the time as a young family. Years later, when I met them in their eighties, they told me they had once seen a “pop guy” in the distance, standing outside Harrods and handing out records. Christina approached him to get a free copy and saw that it was a young man with prominent teeth: Freddie Mercury. Perhaps, after waiting so long for the album to be released, he was simply eager to get his music heard.
