When Freddie Mercury died in 1991, he left most of his estate — including his home and personal belongings — to Mary Austin, his closest friend and former partner. In 2023, she decided to auction more than 1,400 of his possessions at Sotheby’s in London. The collection, titled Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own, raised nearly £40 million. Mary Austin said it was time to close that chapter of her life. Part of the proceeds was donated to AIDS charities.
