At just sixteen, Brian May designed and built his guitar together with his father Harold, using assorted found parts: a bicycle rack, a motorcycle valve spring and mother-of-pearl buttons taken from a shirt. The neck was made from wood taken from a hundred-year-old fireplace. It took nearly two years to complete, and it was eventually named Red Special because of the rich red color of the wood. Brian May still plays this guitar today.
