God Save the Queen

Photographs from Queen’s final tour with Freddie Mercury

“God Save the Queen” was always played as an encore during the tour. Queen’s manager, Jim “Miami” Beach, had invited me to photograph the Magic Tour. The press photographers were required to leave their camera gear and exit the photographers’ pit after just three songs, which meant I had a prime position near the stage all to myself for the rest of the show. Years later, I met Diana Moseley, the costume designer behind Freddie’s cloak for the Magic Tour. She told me that after the opening concert, Freddie had called her and said he needed something grand for the finale — something royal. She created the cloak, and she did not hold back. The audience in Stockholm never got to see it, as it arrived only after the tour had already begun.
