What I remember most strongly from U2 in Globen is not only the band, but the image of the two Trabant cars suspended above the stage. Zoo TV Tour was more than a concert. It was screens, signals, irony, East and West, rock music and media noise all at once. At the same time, I had heard the stories about when U2, much earlier in the eighties, played at Underground in Stockholm. A small basement club by Sergels torg, a long way from a world tour in Globen. What appeals to me most about U2 is still not the stage design, but the commitment. Poverty, disease and people living far from power. Bono has stood close to Nelson Mandela and the fight against AIDS in Africa. That touches me, because I later came to work with Star for Life and AIDS prevention in South African schools. The Trabant cars hung from the ceiling, but behind it all there was also a band that wanted more than just to fill arenas.
