Now it was no longer rock in the usual sense. Metallica came from heavy metal, with roots in thrash metal, harder and more relentless than much of what I was used to photographing. The band was formed in Los Angeles. Behind the drums sat Lars Ulrich, born in Denmark but long based in the United States. At the front stood James Hetfield, with a voice that did not ask for space and a look that did not apologise. It was the Wherever We May Roam Tour. Heavy, black, loud. Not much to negotiate.
